River Cruising and Ocean Cruising are different in several ways. Although some cruise lines offer both, most focus on one or the other. So, how are they different?
1. Ocean cruising takes you TO a country, River Cruising takes you THROUGH a country. You will see more of the country cruising on the river because you are close to the shore and can view castles and beautiful landscapes as you pass them by. Ocean Cruising provides a view of the open sea, which is wonderful as well.
2. With Ocean Cruising, the ship can be the destination, but with River Cruising, the destination is always the country/countries you are visiting. There are very large ocean cruise ships that offer so many activities--surf simulators, ice skating, rock climbing walls and more. River Cruise ships are more intimate, focusing on outstanding service and the local flavor.
3. The demographics are different for River Cruising and Ocean Cruising. Most River Cruise Staterooms are small (because the ships are smaller to cruise the rivers) so the maximum occupancy is smaller per room. River Cruises do not offer kids clubs and babysitting so the age of children on board tends to be older. Some River Cruise lines are adult only but there are those that allow kids as well.
Which one is right for you? Well, that depends on who if traveling with you, where you'd like to go, and the experience you'd like to have. Even within Ocean and River, there are lots of options so you can find the perfect vacation for your family or group.
