5 Tips for Traveling with Teens (and enjoying it!)

Updated: Mar 1, 2023

Traveling with teens can be a challenge. There is so much to consider--especially when you have more than one teen in your family. How do you best avoid the bickering, the arguments, and the phrase "I'm Bored"? Well, I can't guarantee anything, but here 5 tips to lessen the possibility.

  1. Ask them for input. Teens love to see the websites, hear the options, and weigh in on the choices. Every time I plan a trip, my teens what to see the excursion options, the resort options, and especially the dining options.

  2. Feed them well. For most teens, it's all about the food. My oldest son's favorite part of an all inclusive resort? The fact that he can eat whenever and whatever he wants. Virgin Pina Colada? Yes, please. Room service? Well, who doesn't love room service--especially teenagers. It's not my favorite, but teens love a buffet. Consider a cooking class or food tour to enhance everyone's experience on your next trip.

  3. Let them sleep. Teens need more sleep than their parents, generally. While they love to go and experience on vacation, they are also going to need some downtime--and the option to sleep in. Tired teens can be cranky teens and who wants a cranky travel companion?

  4. Give them time to connect with their friends. I am not a fan of my kids being on their phones or tablets incessantly when we are on vacation. But I do think giving them a certain amount of time to text, call, face time, or post about their travel adventures on social media helps them to feel connected to friends at home and keeps them happier while traveling.

  5. Have an adrenaline adventure. Museums and lazing on the beach all day are typically not going to be favorites of teens. They like activities--roller coasters in theme parks, surfing lessons, zip lines, and ATV tours are great ways to enjoy the day and make some fun memories as a family.

One thing is for sure, your teens are growing up and will soon be out on their own. Don't miss the opportunity to travel, see some new places, have new experiences, and make lasting memories with them now.
